Birthdays are a way to celebrate surviving one more year, sharing and creating memories with your friends, family, and loved ones. There is a lot of research performed to find out the origin of celebrating birthdays and cutting a birthday cake. However, the research remained inconclusive.
In the early days, there were no calendars and that made it impossible to keep track of any special event or birthday but later on, calendars were created, and then people started to mark birthdays of people who mattered in their life.
It was the Greeks who first started celebrating birthdays of their Pharaohs. Although the birthdays were not celebrated on the day of their liberal birth instead they celebrated their birth when any Pharaoh was crowned in Egypt. They considered these pharaohs as their Gods and that is why so much importance is given to celebrating their birthdays.
When did birthday celebrations start or begin?
As you have already read about Egyptians, the Greeks also adopted the tradition of celebrating birthdays of their Gods. They organized events on the birthdays of Greek Gods and lighted candles.
Birthdays are considered a Pagan ritual by many people of the Christian community. The Pagans lighted candles to represent bad spirits that might enter in the life of the person whose birthday is being celebrated. The burning of candles was a form of protection to ward off evil spirits and when candles were blown away it meant that the evil spirits are deflected.
There is also evidence that suggests that Romans initially celebrated birthdays of common men. On the birthday of people at prominent positions in the Roman regime holidays were also held.
Even though Christians thought of birthdays as a Pagan ritual but later on they started celebrating the birthday of Jesus on 25th December known as the Christian festival Christmas.
The ritual of cutting birthday cakes gained popularity when the Germans started celebrating birthdays of their kids by cutting delicious cakes and placing candles on it. The count of candles matched the number of years spent after your birth and one more candle was added to signify the hope of living the next year filled with lots of joy.
The industrial revolution and the increase in the number of bakeries led to a huge rise in the popularity of cake cutting ceremony on birthdays as well as for other occasions like wedding, anniversary, office inauguration, etc.
The 18th birthday of a person holds special significance in many cultures because at this age the person is considered to be transformed from a child to an adult. The 25th birthday is known as a Silver jubilee, 50th birthday means golden Jubilee and if you are lucky enough to celebrate your 100th birthday then it is known as Platinum Jubilee.
